Waste Connections of Canada, the leader in non-hazardous solid waste management in North America is looking for an energetic, creative, and self-driven Environmental Engineer to join our Canadian Region Engineering team. We are looking for someone who can work independently, is willing to travel as required, is safety orientated, energetic, and focused on supporting our operations while creating value through our core values.

The focus of this position will be two-fold. Firstly, monitor environmental compliance at our landfills, transfer stations, material recovery, and waste collection vehicle facilities across Canada, and secondly to work as part of the engineering team on planning and environmental studies, facility expansion, landfill gas, and leachate management systems and various other waste management construction projects.  It is expected that leachate management and landfill gas utilization projects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions will be an important aspect of this position. The successful incumbent will have the opportunity to grow and expand their role and responsibilities at Waste Connections.

Reporting to the Canadian Region Manager of Engineering, the Environmental Engineer will be based in Woodbridge, Ontario but will be required to travel to our facilities throughout Ontario, Quebec, Alberta, British Columbia, and Manitoba.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct environmental compliance inspections and audits at our Canada-wide solid waste transfer stations, material recovery facilities, hauling facilities, and landfill sites.

  • Provide support to our facility managers to solve operational, design, and compliance challenges.

  • Further, develop expertise in the area of landfill gas and leachate management and treatment and utilization.

  • Provide direction as required to external engineering consultants and contractors as it relates to various planning and construction projects.

  • Assist with environmental permit and approval applications.

  • Review monitoring, construction, and operating reports.

  • Help develop and implement safety, emergency, spill, stormwater, and other site operating plans.

  • Assist with the preparation and review of facility design and development plans, develop cost estimates and evaluate engineering proposals and specifications.

  • Maintain records and information databases.

  • Meet with regulatory agencies as needed.

  • Represent the company in community events and  conferences

Qualifications:

  • Bilingual will be beneficial (English/French) but not a pre-requisite

  • Postgraduate qualification in Environmental, Civil or other related Engineering or Science field

  • Minimum of five years professional experience working in North America

  • Previous waste management or landfill experience would be beneficial

  • Experience with Canadian Environmental Laws and Regulations would be beneficial

  • Compliance auditing experience would be beneficial!

  • Ability to travel both in and out of province as required

  • Excellent internal personal and analytical skills

  • Excellent communication and report writing skills

  • Valid Provincial Driver License
