Job Description

Title: Director, Strategic Communications and Community Impact
Position: Full-time Permanent
Reports to: Vice President, Brand Strategy and Communications
Direct Reports: 3
Location: Toronto (temporarily remote due to Covid 19)

The Position
Under your leadership, Kids Help Phone will not only be in demand as keynote speakers at conferences/councils/webinars, asked for interviews by national media as the expert in youth mental health but also heralded as the innovator building unprecedented access for every young person who need our help.
The successful candidate will ideally understand the non-profit landscape in Canada. A proven implementer and change agent with the ability to facilitate and participate in discussions that impact the entire organization. They’ll be a role model with a can-do attitude and will be prepared to roll up their sleeves to get things done.

What You’ll do
Build Kids Help Phone national awareness through impactful and engaging communications while promoting our differentiation as charity of choice while fiercely protecting our reputation
Accountable for internal and external communications including the development of thought leadership platforms that attract attention from a range of stakeholders including donors/prospective donors, the media, industry experts and the public at large
Develop and maintain your own excellent relationships with the media including local and national newspapers, magazines, radio, TV and digital outlets as well as build incrementally new influential relationships with key industry media outlets
Capture the CEO’s voice to support executive level communications including writing speeches, opinion pieces, letters, and Messages to staff, Board of Directors communications and CEO/Senior Executive Presentations
Participate in building an agency model culture while growing a dynamic industry leading team who are deeply committed to the values and the mission of the organization
Fiercely defend the organization’s brand reputation through social media listening, traditional media monitoring and a tested / defined Communication Crisis Management strategy
Build strong internal relationships with cross-functional groups, including information technology, fundraising and operations teams
Fiscally responsible – management of budget, assuming clear definition of overall key success metrics

What You’ll Need
A university degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or equivalent;
10+ years of experience in building and activating brands, communications, and public relations roles, with a preference for a candidate with both client and agency-side experience
5+ years experience leading teams consisting of direct reports, with a record of accomplishment building brands through PR, events, social media and earned media
Bilingual (English/French) is an asset.
Ability to develop and manage departmental and project budgets
Possess an acceptable “Vulnerable Person Sector Criminal Reference Check” prior to starting employment.
You bring the following:
Comfort and experience as a national organization’s spokesperson
Proven strategic CEO communications writing and verbal skills
Superior writing and verbal communications skills, with a high attention to detail
Thrive in a fast-paced, purpose-led, value-driven environment
Deep public relations and corporate communications experience
A service oriented, results focus, with a driven attitude and an innovative approach to communications and problem solving
Exceptional media relations experience, including organizational risk mitigation and management
Community engagement experience, working with key influencers and brand ambassadors
Experience with youth engagement and/or youth outreach initiatives an asset
Demonstrated computer skills and competence with standard computer tools associated with business, communications, and project management
